Resorts are located in different atolls all across the Maldives.
How to get to your resort?
Male’ International Airport is located on the island of Hulhule. There are more than 2 dozens of international schedule flights flying into Maldives from major cities in Asia, Middle East and Europe. These include SriLankan Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates Airlines, Indian Airlines, Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, Austrian Airlines and Malaysian Airlines, with some of these airlines flying daily, weekly or twice a week. Another 14 companies offers regular charters, among them include Britannia Airways, Balair, Monarch Airlines, Lauda Air, Air Europe of Italy, Sterling Airways, Air Holland, South African Airways, Air Tours International connecting the Maldives to many centers of the world.
Transport from the airport to your resort is either by speed boat or seaplane. If you are willing to travel by seaplane, do take note that seaplane operates only during day time. Grab a seat near the window and have your camera ready to get shots of the spectacular views of the atolls. The seaplane will land next to a floating platform, where small boats from the resort will bring you to shore.
What is there to do?
The Maldives has captured the excitement and fascination of scuba diver and snorkeling enthusiasts around the world. With its top class diving spots, it is a wonder that must be discovered. If diving is not your cup of tea, then you can just take a dip in the turquoise water. A short swim from the beach and snorkelers can experience the same pleasure from the surface.
Honeymooners and couples who are hoping to get married in a piece of paradise, they come to the Maldives. Vacationers who want to relax and do absolutely nothing, they seek the Maldives!
When to go?
On the map, the Maldives Islands are no less than a few splashes of ink. The country is situated southwest of the tip of India and stretches all the way to the equator. That said, the Maldives experiences a whole year of sunshine but the best months to go are from December to April (the rainy season is from May to November). These are also the times when people pack the hotels and resorts.
What to bring?
You do not really need many items to bring when visiting the country since the essentials are readily available at shops that are located on resorts. But to remind you of it, here is a list of the things that you should have:
- Lotion
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen with high SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
- Bathing suits
- Cap or hat
- Insect repellant
- Light cotton clothing
- US dollars and credit cards
What to wear?
Since it is generally hot and humid in the Maldives, it is advised that visitors should wear light t-shirts and shorts. If you are going there for a business meeting, the attire is usually casual. Bring a light rain jacket, if you plan to visit during the rainy season – the non peak season. When you are in the capital Male’, wear modest clothes. The country is a Muslim nation, so be respectful. Nudity is prohibited in all their resorts.
Crime & Safety
The Maldives is a fairly safe country. While petty crimes do exist, they can be limited to Male’ and other inhabited islands. To be safe, do not leave your belongings unattended.
Money matters
The local currency is called the Rufiyaah (please remember to check the current conversion rate). However, almost all resorts accept dollar as a form of payment. While some resorts can accept Euro, Pound sterling and the Japanese Yen. Banks and ATMs are mostly located on the capital, Male’. You might find a few in the nearby inhabited islands. Small shops usually do not accept credit cards so make sure you have cash when shopping.
Last but not least
Maldives resorts import almost everything except for fish and coconuts. No wonder the cost of meals in resorts is pretty steep. On top of that, the charges on tours, water sports, equipment hiring, spa treatments and any souvenirs bought from the resort gift shop will be incurred upon checking out. Thus, it is important to confirm with the resort or travel agency before visiting the Maldives what is included in your travel package, to avoid unexpected surprises in your bills.

Determine your budget.
How much you are willing to spend for your trip in the Maldives. Factor in the accommodation type, meals per day, shopping and other expenses that you think you might need.
Take into account the purpose of your trip.
Whether it is a honeymoon, a romantic getaway with your special one, an enjoyable trip with friends or a family vacation. This can help you make a list of the resorts that will specially cater to the purpose of your trip. You might find that all the resorts do look fancy and similar but they may differ from the services and facilities they offer.
Type of accommodation is the most important decision.
To ensure an enjoyable stay in the Maldives, it is important to decide on the type of accommodations provided by Maldives resorts. Most of the resorts will have different sorts of accommodation such as a beach villa, water villa, deluxe villa and the list goes on. Which might be at times pretty confusing.
When you are comparing prices between the resorts, do take note of the services and facilities offered. Some resorts might be older than the other, therefore they might be able to offer a cheaper rate but a compromisable facilities.
All inclusive package
When you are making choices through your travel agencies, stick to the best package based on your trip. Choose for an all inclusive package where ever possible. It would be cheaper than purchasing only an air ticket and making your own reservation for the resorts. If you fancy wine drinking for instance, choose the all inclusive package as a bottle of wine can be wickedly expensive at most resorts.
Peak and off peak season
Finally, understanding the peak and off peak season to the Maldives will definitely make a huge difference in your budget. The peak seasons falls between November to April. During these months, you will expect the best weather, with lots of sunshine and least rain. While Christmas and New Year Holiday is around the corner, it is much expected for the resorts to be more expensive than during the non peak season.
May to October however is known as the monsoon season, as chances for rainy days are expected more than usual. However, this does not mean you will never enjoy the sun as much as during the peak season too!
