The fish market is an attraction you should not miss, as you can find a variety of fish and how these fresh fish are cleansed before they are brought home for the local family to enjoy their meal. The other place of attraction is a local market place where you can find different kinds of fruits and vegetables grown in Maldives. Few minutes walk from there, there is the National Museum which is located in the Sultan Park. It showcases the glories of the Maldives in different era. The colonial-style three storey building houses a variety of artifacts from the past which would give an idea of the unique and rich culture and history of this island nation of which many visitors would have never thought of. The museum is open daily except Friday and public holidays from 9am to 12pm and 3pm to 6pm.

How to get to your resort?

Male’ International Airport is located on the island of Hulhule. There are more than 2 dozens of international schedule flights flying into Maldives from major cities in Asia, Middle East and Europe. These include SriLankan Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates Airlines, Indian Airlines, Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, Austrian Airlines and Malaysian Airlines, with some of these airlines flying daily, weekly or twice a week. Another 14 companies offers regular charters, among them include Britannia Airways, Balair, Monarch Airlines, Lauda Air, Air Europe of Italy, Sterling Airways, Air Holland, South African Airways, Air Tours International connecting the Maldives to many centers of the world.

Transport from the airport to your resort is either by speed boat or seaplane. If you are willing to travel by seaplane, do take note that seaplane operates only during day time. If you are scheduled to arrive after sunset, you have to stay overnight in Male’ and travel to your resort the following day. Traveling in a seaplane is a nice experience. Grab a seat near the window and have your camera ready to get shots of the spectacular views of the atolls. The seaplane will land next to a floating platform, where small boats from the resort will bring you to shore.

What is there to do?

When to go?

On the map, the Maldives Islands are no less than a few splashes of ink. The country is situated southwest of the tip of India and stretches all the way to the equator. Bring a light rain jacket, if you plan to visit during the rainy season – the non peak season. When you are in the capital Male’, wear modest clothes. The country is a Muslim nation, so be respectful. Nudity is prohibited in all their resorts.

Crime & Safety

The Maldives is a fairly safe country. While petty crimes do exist, they can be limited to Male’ and other inhabited islands. To be safe, do not leave your belongings unattended.

Money matters

The local currency is called the Rufiyaah (please remember to check the current conversion rate). However, almost all resorts accept dollar as a form of payment. While some resorts can accept Euro, Pound sterling and the Japanese Yen. Banks and ATMs are mostly located on the capital, Male’. You might find a few in the nearby inhabited islands. Small shops usually do not accept credit cards so make sure you have cash when shopping.

Last but not least

Maldives resorts import almost everything except for fish and coconuts. No wonder the cost of meals in resorts is pretty steep. On top of that, the charges on tours, water sports, equipment hiring, spa treatments and any souvenirs bought from the resort gift shop will be incurred upon checking out.
